    Hello Friend,
I think your windows Os were not recognizing the External Hard disk. First you have to fix this Issue In order to backup you System.

Firstly, Check out whether you drive working perfectly or not by connecting it to another system. If works,

Then Get into Device Manger Section and check out whether you Disk driver has been Listed Under Disk drives or not, If yes then try to trouble shoot it and update the driver.

If not, then Check out Universal Serial Bus Controller In Device Manager were working perfectly.

If above steps not worked, then RUN SYSTEM FILE CHECK utility to restore damaged or Missing files. To do so:

    1) Open RUN and type sfc /scannow

    2) If prompts Insert windows Installation Disc and Continue the process.

Hope this steps will be Useful, Thank you.

Dear friend i think you have opted to restore data and since your external does has any backup data windows is asking you for the disk.1. Just make a back on your hard drive2. Now store these back up files on the external drive3. In the case of emergency you shall be able to restore data from it4. Hope it works

Solution when Windows 8 not recognizing external Hard Drive for backup?

I have connected an external western digital external hard drive to my Windows 8 System, am able to access it and share files through it normally. But when I selected this drive for the backup disk my Windows 8 system returns message that there is no external drive connected to system. But the external disk is already connected, so tell me where is the problem here and how do I rectify and fix it?
